Bath College stonemasons at Mansion

Event starts: 07 December 2010

A team of 15 students from Bath College are working to restore the east gable of the North Range of Woodchester Mansion. Under the direction of the Trust’s Training Officer, Jonny Anderson, the second year stonemasonry students are working to finally complete repairs that have been student training projects since the early days of the Mansion's Living Classroom training programme.

The students are spending one day a week at the Mansion for ten weeks. The biggest area requiring repair is the north side of the gable and to enable repairs the students have removed the coping stones and, temporarily, the finial (variously referred to as an imp or the devil) is to be found in the Ironing Room above the laundry.

When repairs are complete on that face of the Mansion the scaffolding will be removed and resited to repair last year’s frost damage to the area above the former visitor entrance.
