Award for "Incredible" Woodchester Mansion

VISITORS’ praise has won unique Woodchester Mansion in Stroud an award from the world’s largest travel community.

A Certificate of Excellence has been awarded by Trip Advisor to the unfinished architectural gem that is the mansion.

The Trip Advisor website boasts more than 260 million monthly visitors so its accolade was a big boost to efforts to raise awareness of Woodchester Mansion’s many attractions, its visitor operations co-ordinator Kelvin Lewis said.

“We were awarded the certificate because the mansion consistently earned outstanding feedback from Trip Advisor travellers,” said Mr Lewis.

The vast majority of those travellers rated Woodchester Mansion as either excellent or very good on the Trip Advisor site.

“This place is just incredible” posted one traveller, while another wrote that discovering the mansion was “like finding hidden treasure”.

The Victorian Gothic building was mysteriously abandoned halfway through construction in 1873. It is now open to the public almost every day until the end of October thanks to the independent charity that runs it, the Woodchester Mansion Trust.

Grade One listed Woodchester Mansion has been saved from dereliction by the trust but will never be completed because its unfinished state gives unique sight of the stonemason’s craft.

The mansion, that lies within a stunning National Trust owned valley, also organises special events including performances and children’s summer holiday activities.

Its full programme can be found on its website:
