Ghost Walks at Haunted Mansion

Halloween 2013GHOSTLY goings on have made a haunted house in Stroud the number one spooky choice for Halloween revellers later this month.

Spine chilling stories and experiences recorded over the centuries at Woodchester Mansion mean the charity’s fund raising Halloween fancy dress party is already sold out.

But there is still a chance for families to visit the gothic building, that wouldn’t look out of place in any Hammer House of Horror movie, for some fancy dress fun.

There’ll be daytime ghost walks, visits to the spooky cellar and Halloween games from 11am-4pm on both October 25th and 26th.

Mysterious Woodchester Mansion, near Nympsfield, was abandoned midway through construction in 1873.

Whether or not the workmen saw a ghost is lost in the mists of time.

Yet something made them down tools and flee, leaving behind ladders still propped up ready for future construction which never happened.

That left Woodchester Mansion unfinished and with an atmosphere where it is easy to imagine all sorts of ghouls and demons roaming around.

“My favourite ghost story is about a French plasterer called Francois who was apparently murdered in the kitchen and now haunts the Mansion,” manager of the visitor attraction Hannah McCanlis said.

“My predecessor had an encounter in the brewery area … she had her hard hat knocked off her head by an unseen force.”

There are stories of ghostly men who walk up and down the Mansion track at night, of the spirit of a little girl that has been seen dancing, or running up and down the staircase, and many, many more.

Said Hannah: “Even the Mansion’s own paranormal invigilator won’t go on the top corridor by himself after dark after he was possessed by something there.”
