Meet Feathered Jake on Hawk Walk

HawkHARRIS Hawk Jake is a high flying attraction all set to lure autumn visitors to Stroud’s stunning Woodchester Mansion.

Male bird of prey Jake, 12, will be star of the show when falconer John Dowling, from nearby Stonehouse, welcomes members of the public to walk with the hawks.

“We always use this species of bird for the Hawk Walks.  They are generally easy going with a nice temperament.  These birds are indigenous to South America,” John, 47, said.

People will learn more about John’s birds on the Hawk Walk through beautiful Woodchester Park which surrounds the architectural masterpiece that is the unfinished Mansion.

Plus they’ll even have the chance to experience a bird of prey flying to their fists.

John, who left senior management in the local aerospace industry to become a full time falconer, said:  “Every time I take somebody up to the Mansion, even local people, they love it but they say they didn’t know it was here.”

But now Jake and John’s three other Harris Hawks, his Peregrine Falcons, Buzzard, Kestrell, Barn Owl, Goshawk, and Indian Eagle Owl are out the help put the mansion on the map.

So much so that John is even currently building a special aviary, called a chamber, at the Mansion to provide a public viewing platform for his birds.

Hawk Walks include a guided tour of the mysterious Mansion itself, a visit to its rare bat observatory, and refreshments, and the next one will be during school half-term week on Wednesday, October 29th.
