Gargoyles

Gargoyles throw rainwater clear of the building. Essential to assist in keeping the foundations dry, in a house built of permeable limestone, before damp courses had been invented, and in area with plenty of rainfall! Here you can see close-ups of some of the amazing carved stone creatures that both decorate the building and perform this useful function. They explicitly illustrate the second of Augustus Pugin’s True Principles of Pointed Architecture.
