The Watchers of Woodchester Mansion

A Magical Summer Awaits…

‘The Watchers of Woodchester Mansion’ brings  adventure, storytelling and discovery to families.

This summer, Woodchester Mansion is inviting families to step into a world of imagination, mystery and play with a brand-new outdoor experience: The Watchers of Woodchester Mansion.

Running every Thursday throughout August  this exciting collaboration with immersive theatre specialsts Rusticus promises an unforgettable day out where history meets storytelling and the landscape comes alive.

A Journey Beyond a Simple Visit

Families will begin their adventure in the grounds of Woodchester Mansion, where they’ll meet a curious Professor and their mysterious Assistant. What starts as a guided tour quickly transforms into something more magical.
Inspired by the intricate carvings throughout the Mansion – from gargoyles and beasts to creatures watching from the stonework – visitors are swept into an unfolding story that asks: what if these figures were more than decoration?
Guided by lively performers, families will journey through woodland and open spaces, meeting a series of unforgettable characters on the way – from a mischievous forest spirit to a fluttering butterfly and a playful bat. Each encounter brings interactive activities designed especially for children, blending creativity, movement and imagination with the landscape itself.

Play, Create and Discover Together

Along the route, families will:

  • Shape clay faces with the Green Man of Woodchester Mansion
  • Explore the mechanics of flight with a newly emerged butterfly
  • Navigate playful echolocation games with an enthusiastic bat
  • Learn about the Mansion’s past through hands-on activities

Each moment builds toward a magical mystery at the heart of the Mansion – a story of a stone creature that may not be as still as it seems.

The Adventure Continues at the Mansion

The theatrical walk concludes at Woodchester Mansion itself, where families uncover the story’s ending and hear a local tale of protection, magic and hidden guardians.

After the performance, visitors are invited to:

  • Explore the Mansion at their own pace
  • Visit HENRY’S CAFE for refreshments (ideal for accompanying grandparents!)
  • Enjoy the National Trust play trail in the Park on their return journey

It’s a full day designed with families in mind – combining outdoor adventure, creativity, heritage and relaxation.
